Case Study: West Gate Tunnel Project
Since 2019, 1300TempFence has proudly supported the delivery of the West Gate Tunnel Project, Melbourne’s largest road infrastructure project since CityLink opened in 1998.
Delivered as a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban, this city-shaping, multi-billion-dollar project has transformed travel across Melbourne’s west. Spanning a 17-kilometre corridor, the project incorporates a highly complex network of twin tunnels, elevated roadways, bridges, freeway widening works and new connections designed to improve capacity, safety and network resilience for more than 200,000 vehicles every day.
With major construction commencing in 2018 and the tunnel officially opening to traffic in December 2025, the West Gate Tunnel represents one of Victoria’s most significant infrastructure achievements and 1300TempFence is proud to have played a role in its successful delivery.
A Long-Term Partner on a Live Infrastructure Environment
1300TempFence began supporting the West Gate Tunnel Project in 2019, working alongside construction teams across multiple work zones as the project evolved over several years.
From early works through to completion, our experienced Melbourne team demonstrated the experience, scale and reliability required to operate on a major live infrastructure project. With constantly shifting site boundaries, changing traffic conditions and evolving safety requirements, our ability to mobilise quickly, scale installations, and maintain compliance was critical to keeping works moving safely and efficiently.
Our teams worked collaboratively with project stakeholders to ensure temporary works solutions were installed, modified and maintained in line with site staging, program changes and strict safety standards, minimising disruption while maximising protection for workers, road users and the surrounding community.
Scope of Supply and Installation
Over the course of the project, 1300TempFence supplied and installed a broad range of temporary works solutions, supporting multiple construction zones simultaneously.
Over the duration of this 6 year project, here are just some of many products the 1300TempFence team supplied:
- Over 40,000 metres of temporary fencing
- Over 13,000 individual braces were installed
- 444 ground protection mats
- 119 acoustic curtains
- 1,065+ metres of barbed wire
- And over a kilometre of water-filled barriers
This scale of delivery reflects not only our extensive fleet and inventory, but also our ability to plan, coordinate and execute complex installations across a large, dynamic infrastructure footprint.
While 1300TempFence played a critical role as the temporary fencing hire partner on the West Gate Tunnel Project, the scale and duration of works also required the permanent procurement of site safety and traffic management products to support ongoing operations.
In parallel with our hire solutions, the project was supported through products supplied and delivered by our sales arm, Site HQ. This integrated approach allowed project teams to hire where flexibility was required and purchase where long-term deployment made sense, ensuring continuity, cost efficiency and consistency across the project lifecycle.
Supporting Community Engagement
Beyond construction support, 1300TempFence also played a key role in the project’s major community event, the West Gate Tunnel Discovery Day. Prior to the tunnel opening to live traffic, more than 51,000 members of the public registered to walk through the tunnel.
For this significant occasion, our experienced events team supplied and installed:
- 173m x Engineered Temporary Fence
- 196m x Pool Fence
- 2231m x Crowd Control Barriers
- 70 x Ground Protection Mats
- 70 x Portable toilets
These measures ensured the event was safe, accessible and well managed, reinforcing 1300TempFence’s depth of experience not only in delivering major infrastructure projects, but also in supporting large-scale public events with confidence and professionalism.
Project Outcome
With the West Gate Tunnel now open to traffic, the project will deliver long-term benefits for Melbourne; easing congestion, improving freight efficiency, enhancing active transport connections, and creating safer, more reliable travel across the city’s west.
1300TempFence is proud to have supported the successful delivery of this landmark infrastructure project and to have contributed to infrastructure that will benefit Victoria for decades to come.
